What Aave changed
Aave said on its official X account at 10:37 UTC on 31 October 2026 (11:37 in Amsterdam) that it has "restricted new tBTC deposits and new borrows against tBTC on Aave". It called the move "a routine, proactive step" following Threshold Network's maintenance update on tBTC, the Bitcoin-backed token issued by Threshold Network.
Aave stressed that its own contracts are not affected and that existing positions remain unchanged. Users can continue to repay and withdraw as normal. Aave also said that new tBTC deposits and borrows will be available again once Threshold's maintenance is complete, but it did not give a date or list the individual markets involved.
What is paused and what still works
The restriction is narrow. Only two actions are blocked: supplying new tBTC to Aave and opening new borrows against tBTC. Everything tied to positions that already exist carries on, so a borrower can still repay a loan and a supplier can still withdraw, exactly as Aave describes it.
Aave framed the step as precautionary and temporary. It linked the restriction to Threshold Network's maintenance update rather than to any problem inside Aave, and said deposits and borrows will reopen once that maintenance is finished. Aave's post did not say how long the maintenance will take, which networks are covered, or whether any other risk setting was changed, and we have not assumed any of those details.
Our take
This is a containment step, not a reported loss. Aave is limiting new exposure to tBTC while the token's issuer finishes maintenance, the same cautious pattern it used during its short market freeze earlier this week. Aave has not reported any loss. If you already hold a tBTC position on Aave, nothing changes, but keep an eye on your health factor and avoid relying on new tBTC deposits to top it up until both teams confirm the maintenance is over. Follow only Aave's and Threshold's official channels for the all-clear, and ignore anyone who asks you to sign a transaction or send BTC to keep your funds safe.
