Fourteen holdings join the collateral list

Backpack added fourteen stocks and ETFs to its collateral system on 17 September 2026, bringing the supported total to seventeen. The additions were SPY, QQQ, NVDA, AAPL, HOOD, CRCL, TSLA, DRAM, GOOGL, META, INTC, AMZN, AMD and SKHY. MU, SNDK and SPCX were already supported. Eligible holdings can support USD borrowing, perpetual futures and spot trading on margin. Product and market availability vary by region.

Collateral is the value backing an obligation

Backpack’s technical margin documentation describes a common collateral pool within each subaccount. It values eligible assets in dollars using quantity multiplied by a reference price and a collateral weight. The weight is a discount applied for risk: a holding’s entire market value need not count. Weights can depend on the size of a position, with current curves shown in account statements.

The same documentation calculates net equity by combining collateral value, unsettled balances and unrealized trading gains or losses, then subtracting borrowing liabilities. Available equity also deducts amounts reserved for orders or positions. Subaccounts can separate pools of risk. These mechanics explain why the newly supported stocks cannot simply be added up at market value and treated as an unrestricted borrowing allowance.

[2]

A holding worth ten thousand is not automatically ten thousand of collateral

Use a deliberately simplified example with an invented stock portfolio worth ten thousand dollars and an assumed collateral weight of eighty percent. The amount counted in this example is eight thousand dollars. The difference of two thousand is the effect of the assumed weight; it is not a trading fee or a sale of part of the portfolio. Eighty percent is an illustration, not a Backpack weight for any listed stock.

Next assume the stock portfolio falls to nine thousand dollars while the illustrative weight stays at eighty percent. Its counted value becomes seven thousand two hundred dollars, a decline of eight hundred. The number of shares has not changed. This matters because a person looking only at share quantity might think the support for an existing obligation was unchanged too.

If the hypothetical account also has a two-thousand-dollar borrowing liability and no other components, the simplified net-equity calculation starts at six thousand dollars and falls to five thousand two hundred. That does not identify a liquidation threshold. Actual margin rules need additional inputs. It does show how a market move in the collateral can affect the account even when the borrowed amount is unchanged.

Two falling positions can affect the same account

Expand the invented example by adding a separate trade that loses three hundred dollars over the same period. The simplified net equity would then be four thousand nine hundred, after the lower collateral value and that trading loss. Looking at the trade alone would reveal only three hundred of deterioration; looking at the collateral alone would reveal eight hundred. Together they account for eleven hundred.

This arithmetic explains the attraction and the consequence of a shared pool. A holding can support activity without first being sold, but the support does not become immune to the holding’s own price movement. A person using a technology stock as collateral for another technology-sensitive position should therefore model the case in which both weaken together, rather than assuming one always offsets the other.

The reverse illustration is also informative. If the collateral rises while the separate trade loses money, the combined account might look more stable than that trade really was. That does not make the trade successful. It means two different contributions happened to offset in the total. A combined balance is useful for margin, while a separate breakdown is useful for understanding performance.

Eligibility does not require using leverage

A reader holding one of the newly added securities can understand the announcement without opening a loan or another position. Collateral eligibility creates an additional potential use for a holding. The decision to use that capacity is a separate change to the account’s obligations.

For someone who does want that use, the key output is the account’s actual usable equity under its current composition. Our invented weights and prices show the relationships, not the maximum permitted position. The new list identifies which holdings may enter the calculation; the live margin system determines what their contribution is in the account that will carry the exposure.

An invented 80% weighting gives $8,000 of collateral value.

After the asset value falls, 80% of $8,000 is $6,400.

$8,000 minus $6,400 is $1,600. No live asset weight or borrowing limit is implied.
