What Kraken announced
Kraken used its main X account on 29 October 2026 to push a USDC vault with a new selling point. Users can earn up to 4.5% APY on USDC, a rate Kraken quotes as of October 2026, and up to $100,000 of their USDC may be eligible for coverage against events such as smart contract exploits, subject to Firelight's terms. The attached card sums it up as exploit coverage up to $100k, with no lockup.
Kraken's help page explains how the pieces fit. The vault is run by Sentora as its independent curator, and Sentora enrolled the vault in coverage from Firelight, a third party that Kraken says is not affiliated with it. Because the curator did the enrolment, depositors do not have to opt in or buy anything separately.
What is covered, and what is not
The covered list is specific. It includes smart contract exploits, oracle failures, governance exploits and a set of defined economic failures: bad debt, stablecoin depegs and redemption failures. Ordinary market risk and changes in the APY are not covered, and neither are user error, insider theft or regulatory action.
The limit is $100,000 per depositor address per coverage period, and coverage runs in monthly periods. Even within that cap, payouts are also bounded by aggregate limits and by the capital actually available in the coverage pool, which Kraken says is visible onchain. If an assessed event happens, no claim form is needed: the event is detected, assessed by a Risk Consortium, funded, and Sentora then pays eligible depositors in USDC onchain.
Who pays for it
There is no separate fee. The cost of coverage is paid out of the vault's yield, so the APY a depositor sees is already net of it, and Kraken says it receives none of that cost. The cost can change from month to month, which is one more reason the advertised rate can move.
Kraken is also blunt about the limits. Firelight coverage is not insurance and is not a government, bank or deposit protection scheme. It does not guarantee a deposit or its rewards, a depositor can still lose money in a covered vault, and Firelight or Sentora can change, suspend or end the coverage. Availability depends on jurisdiction, and the product is offered by Payward Wallet, LLC.
Our take
Built-in exploit coverage on a stablecoin vault is a meaningful step for exchange-run DeFi products, because smart contract failure is the risk most savers worry about and rarely price. Folding the cost into the quoted yield also keeps the comparison honest: the 4.5% figure is what is left after coverage, not before.
Read it as a partial backstop, not a guarantee. The cap is per address and per month, payouts depend on pool capital, and a plain fall in yield or a mistake on your side is not covered. If you already use Kraken, the Kraken code in the top box applies to the account itself and is not tied to this vault; the OKX code at the end is a separate, unrelated trading-fee offer.
