A connected signer enters reservations

Ledger unveiled Atom on 15 October at its Op3n event, opening reservations for a device that combines hardware-wallet signing with everyday mobile applications. Chief executive Pascal Gauthier described it as a way to bring money management, logins, identity and agent approvals onto one device. A signer is the hardware that uses a private key to authorize an action without giving that secret key to the application requesting it.

The Founders Edition announcement offers a refundable $100 deposit and a special reserve price of $849. Atom remains in development, so reserving one is not purchasing a finished, immediately available product. The announcement’s illustrations and feature descriptions should be read in that context.

How everyday apps and signing are separated

The technical whitepaper describes two environments: a mobile operating system for ordinary applications and Ledger OS for sensitive approvals. They run on physically separate hardware. A hardware switch routes the shared screen and touch input to Ledger OS during Secure Mode. The design aims to prevent an application controlling the ordinary mobile environment from rewriting the displayed signing request or supplying the approval tap.

A reserved strip called the Secure Bar indicates which environment is active, while a separate PIN unlocks the signing side. This matters because the screen used to browse an application and the screen used to authorize its request can look like one continuous experience, although different hardware controls them. These are Ledger’s design claims, not independent test results for a shipping Atom. The whitepaper describes a planned whole-device security evaluation separately from certification of the secure chip; the latter does not certify the entire product.

A mobile device with important calling limits

Atom’s large touchscreen and camera may resemble a conventional phone, but its product page explicitly describes a data-only device. Cellular connectivity carries internet data, not ordinary mobile-network calls or text messages. It cannot call emergency services over the cellular network. Internet calling may be possible through third-party applications, which makes the distinction important for anyone considering replacing a daily phone.

Ledger also describes a physical Privacy Switch that disconnects the camera and microphone at the circuit level. This is a separate control from choosing an app’s software permissions. The product page says hardware protection applies to selected built-in functions and applications that integrate with it. Installing an ordinary app therefore does not, by itself, establish that all its activity receives the signing system’s protection.

Payment, delivery and cancellation remain conditional

Ledger’s reservation notice estimates delivery in summer 2027, while the announcement’s footnote says the second quarter of 2027. Those descriptions are not identical, and neither is a firm shipping commitment. Buyers pay a deposit first and the balance later. Where local prices are converted from euros, exchange-rate changes can alter that balance; the final amount is shown before confirmation.

The notice allows a full refund before shipment and until 14 days after receipt, including any balance already paid. Delivery remains conditional on applicable regulatory approvals, with separate requirements described for the United States and European Union. Regional hardware versions do not guarantee compatibility with every carrier. Mobile service requires a separate operator plan and may add charges. App availability and third-party integrations are also subject to change before launch, so the reservation does not lock in every demonstration or partner feature.

OpenClaw integration is a plan for the device

In its official announcement thread, Ledger says OpenClaw will come preloaded on Atom and connect directly to Agent Intent. Users would register their OpenClaw agents and authorize actions on the device from day one. An agent is software that performs tasks through connected tools; registration and permission to perform a particular action are separate steps.

The wording concerns the planned Atom experience. It should not be mistaken for a claim that the device is already in customers’ hands. For someone evaluating the reservation, the relevant distinction is between software already available and the future hardware intended to bring its approval process together.
