Stablecoin borrowing comes to Ledger Wallet

Ledger announced Crypto Loan in its 7 October release notes, letting eligible Ledger Wallet users borrow USDC or USDT against wrapped Bitcoin through Morpho, with Yield.xyz providing the integration. A stablecoin is a token designed to track a reference currency; these two are dollar-linked. The feature brings borrowing and position management into the wallet interface for people who want liquidity while retaining exposure to Bitcoin. Availability depends on country, and the announcement does not give a complete list of eligible jurisdictions.

The collateral is wrapped Bitcoin on Ethereum

The supported collateral is wBTC or cbBTC, tokens representing Bitcoin on Ethereum. Native BTC on the Bitcoin network cannot be deposited directly into this Ethereum lending route. Obtaining a wrapped token introduces a conversion step and reliance on its custody arrangement. Once supplied, the collateral is held by a smart contract, a program on the blockchain that enforces the loan. Keeping the signing keys on a hardware device does not leave pledged assets available for unrelated spending.

Loan-to-value, or LTV, compares the amount owed with the current value of the collateral. For an illustrative $1,000 debt backed by $2,000 of collateral, it is 50%. If collateral value falls to $1,500 with debt unchanged, it becomes about 66.7%. This arithmetic illustrates shrinking headroom; it is not a quote, a recommended borrowing level or a liquidation forecast.

Approval, borrowing and repayment are separate actions

Ledger’s setup guide covers desktop and mobile, and says these loans run on Ethereum. Users need the current wallet and device software, supported collateral and ETH for network fees. From Crypto Loan, the simulation screen lets them select the assets and amount, then shows required collateral, interest and LTV before choosing the receiving account.

The documented setup has three separately signed transactions: enable borrowing, authorize access to collateral, and authorize the deposit and borrowing. Those permissions are not the same thing as completing a loan. The guide also discloses a fee equal to 1% of the borrowed amount, with network and protocol costs separate. Interest is an additional, variable cost.

Afterward, the loan screen supports adding collateral, borrowing more and repayment. Full repayment precedes withdrawal of remaining collateral. If liquidation has already removed some collateral, repaying the remaining debt does not restore what was sold.

The Morpho website has a separate Ledger connection

Alongside the in-app loan, Ledger announced direct access from the Morpho website. This route starts at app.morpho.org: select Ledger Wallet in the connection menu, connect and unlock the signer, and choose an account through Ledger Sync. The announcement names Chrome, Brave and other Chromium browsers, supports USB or Bluetooth, and excludes the original Ledger Nano S. Its broader Ethereum and major-layer-two network scope should not be confused with the native loan guide’s Ethereum-only scope.

Ledger describes Clear Signing as readable transaction details on the hardware screen, and Transaction Check as a preview of the proposed outcome. These address the approval process. Selecting a connection method does not itself supply funds, select a suitable market or establish that a later request is safe. The user still needs to examine the actual operation being authorized.

Market risk remains after a transaction is signed

Morpho connects lenders and borrowers through lending markets. Vaults can allocate deposits across markets under configured risk rules, and lending yield principally comes from borrowers’ interest. That is a different position from pledging collateral to receive a loan: the depositor seeks a return, while the borrower owes a debt. A vault’s displayed annual yield is not a fixed future payout.

Morpho also describes risks that a hardware signer cannot eliminate. Contract defects, inaccurate external price feeds and network disruption can affect positions. Falling collateral values can lead to liquidation, where collateral is taken to repay debt. Lenders may face delayed withdrawals when available liquidity is already borrowed. The protocol’s overview says supplied assets do not receive government bank-deposit insurance. Understanding the market and its exit conditions therefore remains part of using the new access routes.
