Stock trading through a digital wallet
OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the company behind the New York Stock Exchange, are preparing OKXICE, a proposed US market for trading tokenized shares through digital wallets. Tokenized shares represent stock interests as digital records on a blockchain. OKX’s announcement describes a global, around-the-clock service, extending the intended trading experience beyond a conventional exchange session. The service is still proposed: the announcement does not open trading or establish anyone’s eligibility.
The 4 October 2026 notice lists 63 proposed stock tickers. Cerebras has separately objected to inclusion of its stock. Individual and institutional access would require identity and wallet checks plus approval by the token provider. Complete country and US-state eligibility is not supplied.
OKX had introduced its partnership with ICE on 5 March 2026, describing an investment and a board seat for ICE. Tokenized securities were already part of the stated plan: the companies intended to explore combining traditional market infrastructure with digital-asset technology. That earlier announcement provided the relationship’s background; the October notice concerns a specific proposed venue.
What investors would own
The backing arrangement matters because the term tokenized stock can describe different products. In January, staff at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explained that a custodial token can record an indirect interest in shares held by an intermediary. In other structures, a token may only track a stock’s returns, without giving its holder rights against the company behind that stock.
OKXICE describes one-for-one backing by shares held through a registered brokerage, with equivalent rights to dividends, shareholder votes and any remaining assets distributed when the company is wound up.
A wallet balance therefore does not tell the whole ownership story. The investor also depends on the records and obligations connecting the token to the shares. SEC staff notes that third-party structures can expose holders to the intermediary’s bankruptcy. Its explanation does not approve OKXICE or determine this venue’s legal status.
How a trade would work
Approved participants would control their wallets and fund trades fully. OKXICE plans Uniswap pools on X Layer, pairing shares with tokens designed to track the dollar. A pool contains assets available to exchange; both sides of a trade settle together in one blockchain transaction.
There are venue service, liquidity-pool and network fees. The notice gives no numerical rates. Pool fees accrue to liquidity providers. Failed transactions can still incur network fees.
X Layer is an Ethereum layer-two network: a separate environment for processing transactions connected to Ethereum. OKX’s developer documentation identifies OKB as its gas token, meaning the token used to pay for network processing. That is a different role from the stock being purchased or the dollar-denominated asset used to fund its purchase. Knowing the network token does not establish a fixed trading cost.
Why the amount of liquidity matters
Uniswap Labs describes price impact as the change in a token’s price caused by the trade itself. The size of that effect depends on liquidity, meaning the assets available in the pool. A trade can have a smaller effect when liquidity is deep and a larger effect when it is shallow. Supply and demand change those conditions over time.
This creates a practical distinction between what a stock token represents and the price available for exchanging it. Two buyers could receive different effective prices if they trade under different liquidity conditions. Share backing does not fix the exchange price, and a stated fee does not capture the price effect of trading against a thinly supplied pool.
The conditions that still stand before launch
Before opening, OKXICE must satisfy the SEC’s conditional framework. It lets qualifying venues undertake specified activities outside exchange-registration requirements while meeting its conditions. The public notice must appear at least 30 calendar days before operations, and the SEC must be notified within one business day of publication.
Stocks tokenized by an unaffiliated third party have a separate deadline: the company issuing the underlying stock must receive notice at least 30 calendar days before trading. A timely objection blocks that stock’s inclusion. These dates are not interchangeable, so counting a month from the public announcement cannot establish when all proposed stocks become tradable.
The framework also forbids claims of SEC registration, approval or endorsement.
