What Coinbase announced

Coinbase posted on its official X account on 2 November 2026 that global derivatives, powered by Deribit, are now live for eligible traders on Coinbase for Agents. The post opens with a simple line: perps trade around the clock, and now an agent can too.

Coinbase for Agents is the service that connects a Coinbase account to an AI agent the user already works with. Coinbase names ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Grok, Perplexity, Hermes and Muse, and says any tool that supports MCP (Model Context Protocol) can connect, with the Coinbase CLI as a fallback. Once connected, the agent can check markets, review the portfolio and place trades. With this update, those trades can include the international derivatives Coinbase runs with Deribit, such as perpetual futures.

What sits behind the derivatives

Coinbase's own perpetuals page says perpetual futures on Coinbase are available through Coinbase Advanced to eligible retail traders in non-US jurisdictions, and are offered by Coinbase Bermuda Limited (CBBM). Leverage runs from 1x to 50x, subject to eligibility, the specific contract and local limits. Markets include BTC and ETH perps, and Coinbase points to its Help Center for the current list.

Perpetuals have no expiry date. They are traded on margin, and funding payments pass between long and short positions to keep the price close to the spot market. Coinbase warns that trading them carries risk, including liquidation. Its pages do not say which of these markets an agent may trade for a given user, only that eligibility depends on region and account.

How you stay in control

Coinbase says the user decides what the agent can do and Coinbase enforces it. Most agent apps let you require approval before every trade, every agent trade runs within Coinbase's safety limits, and an agent can never send funds off Coinbase. You can give the agent its own portfolio so it only trades the money you move into it, and one tap ends its access.

Setup takes a few minutes for most users: add Coinbase to the agent app, sign in, and choose what the agent may access. Coinbase says no code or API keys are needed. Its page also warns that AI agents may fail and that the user carries full responsibility for the agent's trades.

Before you hand an agent leverage

Perpetual futures with leverage can wipe out a position quickly, and an agent that misreads an instruction can do it faster than a person would notice. If you try this, start with a separate portfolio holding only money you can afford to lose, keep trade approval switched on, and set low leverage limits before you let the agent act alone. If you hold dollars on chain, the Base app and Phantom both hold USDC, and their codes are linked on this page.
