What Coinbase announced
Coinbase used its official X account on 28 October 2026 to launch the Coinbase Champions Cup, which it describes as the first global trading competition on Coinbase. The post promises up to $2,000,000 in rewards, says the contest starts on 4 November, and adds that some traders may get a chance at a spot in Coinbase's next in-person event. A short launch video spells out the dates, 4 to 25 November, and says the prizes come in USDC and rewards.
A follow-up post links the registration page, and a second reply carries the legal summary: the Cup is open to eligible users in select jurisdictions, requires at least 100 USDC of trading volume, and is offered by Coinbase Bermuda Ltd. Coinbase also reminds readers that crypto trading involves risk.
Which trades count
The full terms, last updated on 28 October, make clear that this is a derivatives contest, not a spot one. Qualifying trades are perpetual futures and dated futures on Coinbase Advanced, plus options where they are offered. Buying or selling coins on the regular spot market does not count, however large the trade.
If those terms are new to you: a perpetual future is a contract that tracks a coin's price with no expiry date, while a dated future settles on a fixed day. Both let you trade with leverage, meaning you control a position larger than the cash you put down. That magnifies gains and losses alike, which is why the terms call derivatives high risk and stress that nothing in the competition is investment advice.
You have to register first, either on the competition page or in the app. Late registration is allowed after 4 November, but trades placed before you signed up are not added to your score. Entry is free, although the normal trading fees still apply to every order. The window closes at 23:59 UTC on 25 November.
How the prize pool works
The headline $2 million is a ceiling, not a guarantee. The pool starts at 100,000 USDC and unlocks higher tiers only as total trading volume across the whole competition grows. Whatever the final size, it is split across three leaderboards: profit and loss in notional terms (35%), profit and loss in percentage terms (35%) and total volume (30%). Each board shows the top 100 traders.
Prizes are paid in USDC, but not quickly: the terms say roughly 60 to 90 days after the competition ends, which points to early 2027. Separate weekend competitions with their own smaller pools run for Australia, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Singapore and India.
Who can join
Participants must be at least 18 and fully verified. The list of eligible countries includes the Netherlands, Germany, France and Türkiye, while the UK is limited to professional clients and Australia to wholesale clients. Coinbase Business accounts cannot take part. In the US the contest runs through Coinbase Financial Markets for dated futures, and US traders compete only on the two profit and loss boards, not on volume. Wash trading, collusion or other abusive trading leads to disqualification.
Our take
Read the structure before you chase the number. Two thirds of the pool rewards profit, and one board rewards percentage gains, so a small account with a good run can in principle compete with large traders. The volume board, by contrast, favours whoever can trade the most, and leveraged futures can lose money much faster than the prize could make it back. Treat 100 USDC as the entry ticket, not a strategy, and only trade sizes you would accept losing.
If you do win, the payout lands as USDC months later. That is a good moment to decide where you want to hold dollars on chain. The Base app and Phantom both hold USDC, and their codes are linked on this page.
