A new funding option for crypto purchases

Ledger has added Cash App Pay as a payment option through MoonPay in Ledger Wallet. The announcement covers eligible US customers paying in dollars. The purchase starts in the wallet’s Buy flow, where the customer selects an asset, amount and payment method before opening a MoonPay quote. Cash App provides the funding route; MoonPay handles the purchase service.

The balance and account checks that matter

MoonPay’s Cash App help page says that this payment route draws from the Cash App balance. Merely having a card or bank account linked to Cash App does not cover a purchase if the balance is insufficient. The linked Cash App and MoonPay accounts also need matching names. A mismatch can cause the connection to be declined.

The first purchase requires approval of the connection in Cash App; afterward that connection is saved. MoonPay says these purchases count toward its normal account transaction limits. Its help page, checked for this rewrite, lists a Cash App Pay API charge of 2.9% plus $0.30, included within MoonPay’s fee. This is documentation context as of the review date, not a guarantee of the total fee on a future Ledger quote. The checkout remains the place to inspect the actual amount charged and crypto delivered.

An illustrative purchase, from budget to quote

Imagine that Jordan wants to spend no more than $100 in total. Before choosing an asset, Jordan writes down that ceiling and checks the money available in the intended payment balance. A displayed bank balance somewhere else should not be confused with the budget available to this purchase method.

For a simple arithmetic illustration, applying 2.9% plus $0.30 to a hypothetical $100 base produces $3.20. That calculation explains the documented payment component; it does not establish whether a particular screen treats $100 as the base amount or as the all-in amount. It also does not calculate every possible charge or the asset’s exchange rate. Jordan therefore compares the final payment total and the final quantity of crypto on the actual quote.

If two hypothetical quotes both charge $100 but deliver different quantities of the same asset on the same network, the quantity received is the clearer comparison. Looking only at a prominently labelled fee can miss the overall result. This example is a way to read a quote, not a live price comparison or a statement that a competing provider is cheaper.

Diagnose the stage where a purchase stops

A purchase can become confusing when several companies appear in one journey. A useful record separates the quote, payment approval, order status and receipt of the asset. Save the relevant order reference and note which screen showed the problem. There is no need to describe every failure as a hardware-wallet fault simply because the purchase began inside a wallet app.

For instance, a declined account connection is a different observation from a payment that has been accepted while an order remains pending. In the first case, the account details are the natural starting point for investigation. In the second, the order record is more informative. Neither observation alone justifies sending another payment immediately. The practical objective is to find the status of the existing order before creating a second one.

What the integration is useful for

Our reading is that the feature mainly reduces friction for someone who already keeps spending money in Cash App and wants to buy through Ledger’s interface. Its value should be judged against that person’s actual purchase pattern. A familiar checkout can be convenient, but convenience and price are separate considerations.

A reader comparing routes can use one consistent test: the same intended asset, destination network, spending ceiling and time of comparison. Record the amount paid, amount expected and any stated restriction before deciding. That creates a meaningful comparison without assuming that the newest payment method is automatically the best one. For occasional buyers, understanding one complete purchase may be more useful than memorising a long list of supported payment logos.
