What Coinbase is promoting

Coinbase used its official X account on 26 October 2026 to push its direct deposit split. The idea is simple: you point your salary, or part of it, at Coinbase and choose how it is divided. Coinbase says you set the split once and it runs every payday, describing it as a low-effort way to buy crypto that also has zero trading fees.

The video attached to the post shows a Manage allocation screen in the Coinbase app, with a ring showing how much goes to crypto and separate chips for US dollars, Bitcoin and Ether, plus an Add asset button. A follow-up post with a second video walks through the setup.

USDC and the 3.75% rewards rate

One option is to send part of each deposit to USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin. Coinbase says that balance can earn 3.75% rewards with Coinbase One, its paid membership. Without Coinbase One the post does not quote a rate.

The legal note under the post says USDC reward rates are subject to change and may vary by region or because of ongoing experimentation, so the figure you see in your own app is the one that counts.

The fine print

Zero trading fees does not mean the purchase is free of costs. Coinbase says the automatic allocation to crypto is processed as purchases and that a spread may apply, which is the gap between the price you pay and the market price.

Timing depends on your employer. Coinbase says when the money arrives depends on the payor or payroll provider and typically takes 3 to 5 business days from when the payer starts the transfer. The posts do not say which countries can use direct deposit, so check eligibility in the Coinbase app before switching payroll details.

Choosing a wallet for USDC

A direct deposit split keeps the USDC on your Coinbase account. If you would rather hold some of it in a wallet you control yourself, two self-custody options fit well. The Base app at base.app is Coinbase’s own self-custody wallet app, and Phantom is a self-custody wallet that works across several blockchains. Whichever you pick, make sure the network you send USDC on is one that wallet supports.

Our take

Automatic payday buying is a tidy way to dollar-cost average without thinking about it, and parking part in USDC adds a yield if you already pay for Coinbase One. Just keep the spread in mind, start with a small share of your pay, and remember the rewards rate can move.
