“Payday, onchain”
Coinbase Wallet used its official account on 23 October to point employees towards a simple idea: “Payday, onchain. Get paid in USDC straight to your Coinbase Wallet.” The post refers to Deel, the global payroll and employer-of-record platform, which lets salaried staff take part of their pay in stablecoins instead of sending everything to a bank account.
Deel first offered stablecoin withdrawals to contractors. When it extended the option to full-time employees in June, it said 10,000 contractors in 100 countries were already being paid in stablecoins on its platform. Deel says stablecoin payouts settle in minutes, around the clock, with no fees for the employee.
The employer decides first
An employee cannot switch this on alone. Deel describes it as a benefit the employer chooses to offer and can enable or disable at any time. Employers pay a flat $10 per participating employee per month, charged only for staff who actually use the feature. The payroll process, funding method and reconciliation stay the same.
Conversion and on-chain settlement are handled by licensed third-party providers built into Deel. Separately, employers on Deel have been able to fund global payroll from a stablecoin treasury since January 2026.
How the split works
Deel’s help centre sets out the details. Stablecoin pay is available to employees on Employer of Record and Direct Employee Payroll contracts paid in US dollars, euros or pounds. Employees choose USDC, EURC or USDT, although USDT is not offered to employees based in the European Union. They can send between 10% and 25% of their net salary to the wallet; the rest still arrives in their primary bank account, which must stay on file.
Setup happens under Finance, then Payment Settings, then Add account, choosing Stablecoin wallet. The employee picks the stablecoin and the blockchain network and pastes the wallet address. The account shows as Verifying until a confirmation email is approved. The split has to be set before the payroll cutoff; without it, the whole salary is paid in fiat as before.
Deel warns that blockchain transfers cannot be reversed. A wrong address or a network the wallet does not support can mean the money is lost, so the address and network are worth checking twice.
Where it is available
At launch in June, Deel said the feature was live for employer-of-record and global payroll employees in the US and 25 Eurozone countries, naming Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal among them. The help centre’s current list covers the United States, the United Kingdom and a list of European countries that includes the Netherlands. Türkiye is not on that list.
Choosing a wallet for USDC
Deel does not hold the coins for the employee: the payout goes to a self-custody wallet the employee controls. Its help centre names MetaMask, Phantom, Revolut and MoonPay as examples of wallets that can receive stablecoin pay, and Coinbase Wallet is now promoting itself as a destination for the same USDC payday.
For readers choosing where to hold USDC, two self-custody options fit naturally. The Base app at base.app is Coinbase’s self-custody wallet app, the one behind the Coinbase Wallet post above. Phantom, which Deel lists by name, is a self-custody wallet that works across several blockchains. Whichever wallet is used, the network selected in Deel must match a network that wallet supports for the chosen stablecoin.
