What Base announced

Base announced Earn & Borrow on 13 October, describing it as “an end-to-end stack to offer your customers stablecoin yield and loans against their crypto.” The product page explains that platforms use Base infrastructure and third-party lending markets to give eligible customers variable stablecoin yield and loans against their digital assets.

It is aimed at businesses rather than individuals. Base pitches it as a way for an app to give customers more to do with balances they already hold, and to earn from eligible stablecoin balances or from fees on loans.

How the money flows

A customer deposits a supported stablecoin such as USDC in the app. A wallet chosen by the platform, for example a Coinbase Developer Platform wallet or another wallet, holds the assets and signs transactions. Deposits can go through an optional vault, run by an independent curator who picks lending markets and sets risk limits, or straight to a lending protocol such as Morpho or Aave.

Borrowers on those markets pay interest on overcollateralised loans, and that interest is the main source of the yield. Deposits, loans, repayments and liquidations are recorded on Base. Customers can withdraw and stop earning, subject to available liquidity and protocol terms.

Rates and risks

The page shows an average USD stablecoin yield of 4.45% across Base lending markets, before any incentives, and notes that some protocols and ecosystem programmes add rewards on eligible markets. Rates are variable and not guaranteed.

Base is explicit about its role: it does not offer or manage Earn products itself, lend to end users, provide custody through the service, set rates or guarantee yield or withdrawals. It also discloses commercial relationships with Morpho and Aave, and says neither Base nor Coinbase curates, manages or guarantees any vault. Listed risks include variable rates, liquidity and withdrawal limits, liquidation and smart contract risk.

What it means for users

You will meet Earn & Borrow inside other apps rather than as a Base product. If a wallet or fintech app starts offering USDC yield or loans against crypto on Base, it is worth checking which vault or protocol the money goes to, whether the rate includes temporary rewards, and how withdrawals work when many people leave at once.
