What was announced

Marqeta, a card issuing platform, said on 16 October that it is working with Coinbase so its enterprise customers can launch cards backed by stablecoin balances. Base summed it up in a post the same day: Marqeta “is bringing stablecoin-backed cards to enterprise customers, with settlement on Base.”

The offer is aimed at both crypto-native companies and businesses with no crypto background that want to add stablecoin features to their card programmes.

Who does what

Coinbase brings custody of the stablecoin balances, conversion between digital assets and fiat, and settlement on Base, which the release describes as fast, secure and low-cost. Marqeta handles card issuing and processing, plus the bank and card-network relationships that let a card work at checkout.

In practice, a business can fund its card programme around the clock from stablecoins, while cardholders spend at the millions of merchants that already accept cards. Marqeta already issues Coinbase’s own crypto-backed cards, so the two firms are extending an existing relationship.

What the companies said

Alec Lovett, Head of Infrastructure Products at Coinbase, said the collaboration combines Coinbase’s stablecoin payment rails with Marqeta’s issuing and processing to deliver real-time global transactions. Anthony Peculic, Chief Strategy Officer at Marqeta, called expanding the relationship a natural next step as Marqeta builds out the complete stack for stablecoin-backed cards. Marqeta says it processed nearly $400 billion in payments volume in 2025 and is certified to operate in more than 40 countries.

What it means for users

You will not sign up for this directly. It reaches people through the apps and companies that issue cards on Marqeta, so watch for stablecoin-funded cards from existing providers rather than a new Coinbase product. For Base, it is another route for USDC to be spent in shops without the cardholder touching the blockchain.
