What Base announced

Base used its official X account on 29 October 2026 to put a number on the USDC checkout it runs for Shopify. In a short thread, Base said Shopify and Coinbase built the Commerce Payments Protocol on Base because sending stablecoins is easy, while accepting them as a normal payment method in a shop is much harder. The thread links to a new Shopify case study on base.org.

The headline figure on that page is more than $42 million in net settled payment volume across the protocol, plus more than 448,000 payments. Base is careful about what those numbers mean: they come from a public Dune dashboard retrieved on 2 October 2026, they are rounded down, and they cover all activity on the protocol, not only sales made by Shopify merchants. So read $42 million as the size of the rails, not as Shopify's crypto revenue.

How USDC checkout works for shoppers

For shoppers the pitch is simple. An eligible Shopify store can offer USDC at checkout through Shopify Payments, the customer pays from a supported crypto wallet and pays $0 in gas fees, and the merchant still receives local currency on its usual payout schedule. Base says Coinbase Payments executes the transactions and sponsors the gas, so a buyer does not need to hold ETH just to cover network fees.

Escrow, capture and refunds

The merchant side is where the protocol earns its name. A plain wallet-to-wallet transfer is final, but a real order can sell out, change tax or be cancelled. Base explains that the protocol's smart contract first sets the buyer's authorised funds aside in escrow, and only releases them when the merchant captures the payment. Orders can be cancelled before capture and refunded afterwards, much like a card authorisation.

Base adds two safety points. Buyers approve the payment terms and an operator submits the transaction, but the contract stops that operator from changing the terms. If an authorisation expires without being captured, the buyer can reclaim the funds directly. The protocol is open source, so other commerce platforms and payment providers can build on it.

A June 2025 launch, now with numbers

This is not a new launch. Base's engineering blog announced the Commerce Payments Protocol with Shopify on 12 June 2025, describing it as the rails for Shopify's new USDC payment method. What is new on 29 October 2026 is the usage data and the case study. Availability is limited: Base says USDC checkout is only for eligible merchants in supported countries and regions, and that terms may change.

Our take

Over $42 million settled is a meaningful sign that stablecoin checkout works beyond crypto-native shops, even if the figure covers the whole protocol. If you want to pay with USDC where it is accepted, you need a wallet that holds USDC on Base; the Base app and Phantom both do, and both are linked on this page.
