What ether.fi launched

ether.fi said on its official X account on 26 October 2026, at 14:47 UTC, that it has made sending money on ether.fi "as easy as tagging someone". The new feature, called Tags, lets a user claim an @name, pay other people by their tag and get paid by tag, with "no wallet addresses ever again". The post links to ether.fi Cash, the company's card and spending app, as the place to claim one.

ether.fi's linked blog post, titled "ether.fi Tags: Pay Friends by Name", describes it the same way: claim a tag, pay other members by name, and send and receive money without sharing wallet addresses. It adds that members keep control over who can find them. The official image shows the confirmation screen in the app, a gold @ sign with the line "@steve is yours. Share it with friends to receive money instantly".

One tag, chosen once

In a follow-up post ether.fi set out the rules. There is one tag per account, and it cannot be changed once claimed, so it is worth picking carefully.

Tag length is linked to membership tier: ether.fi says VIP gets 3 characters, Pinnacle 4, Luxe 5 and Core 6. Read together with its remark that "the short ones are going fast", higher tiers appear to be able to claim shorter names. ether.fi did not say whether a tag can be longer than these lengths.

What the announcement does not say

ether.fi's posts do not say whether Tags work only between ether.fi members or can also receive funds from outside wallets, which assets or networks a tag payment uses, whether there are fees, or what happens to a tag if an account is closed. Check the details in the ether.fi Cash app before relying on a tag for larger payments.

Our take

Usernames instead of long hexadecimal addresses are one of the simplest ways to make crypto payments less error-prone, and ether.fi is adding them as it keeps building out ether.fi Cash as an everyday money app, after its recent payments and Zeal wallet moves covered on Exchange.news.

Because a tag cannot be changed, treat it like a permanent handle. And when you pay someone by tag for the first time, confirm the name with them through another channel and start with a small amount, since a payment to the wrong person is just as hard to reverse as one sent to the wrong address.
