A dollar of its own

ether.fi introduced ether.fi USD on 6 October as its own US dollar-denominated stablecoin, built with Ethena. On 20 October the company explained why. More than $300 million in stablecoins were held on ether.fi without, in its words, doing anything, and ether.fi says that is not how a neobank should work.

A stablecoin is a token designed to keep a steady value against a currency, here the US dollar. Until now, ether.fi users have held dollar balances in third-party stablecoins such as USDC. The new token gives the platform a dollar that it controls and can build into each of its products.

One balance for card, vaults and transfers

ether.fi describes USD as one native dollar across everything it ships: the card, vaults, borrowing, trading and sending money. Its examples are aimed at ordinary account balances rather than traders: money that waits between card payments, funds not yet placed in a vault, and USDC left in an account after a top-up.

The promise is that none of this money will sit idle any more. The posts do not explain how that will work in practice. They do not say whether existing USDC balances will be converted automatically or only on request, whether holders of ether.fi USD will receive a reward, or how any return would be paid. Until ether.fi publishes product terms, “not idle” is best read as a goal rather than a stated yield.

What Ethena runs behind the token

ether.fi did not build its own issuance system. It says Ethena handles reserves, minting, redemption, compliance and business verification (KYB) end to end. ether.fi decides the reserve mix according to its own risk preferences, while Ethena runs the operations.

Ethena calls the service Ethena Whitelabel and describes it as stablecoin-as-a-service: a partner designs the product and controls distribution, while Ethena provides issuance, backing operations, custody, reserve management and integrations. Partner stablecoins can be backed by Ethena’s USDe, by USDtb, which Ethena says is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank and backed by fiat dollars and BlackRock’s BUIDL fund, or by other approved stablecoins. The mix can be changed over time. Ethena lists jupUSD on Solana, MegaETH’s USDm and suiUSDe on Sui as existing deployments.

What has not been published yet

The most important detail for holders is still missing: which assets back ether.fi USD today and in what proportions. Ethena’s documentation shows that the backing of partner coins can differ widely, and that the mix can be adjusted. A coin backed mainly by USDtb is a different proposition from one backed mainly by USDe, so the published reserve composition matters.

Neither ether.fi post names the networks on which the token is issued, the route for redeeming it into another stablecoin, any fees, or a schedule for introducing it across the products. Exchange.news found no ether.fi help-centre article on the token when checking on 20 October.

What it means for ether.fi users

For now, nothing requires immediate action. If the app offers to convert balances into ether.fi USD, it is worth checking four things first: the reserve composition, how to redeem back to USDC, whether card spending works directly from the new balance, and whether any return is promised, by whom and under which terms.

Card users and depositors should also look for any change to how cashback, vault deposits or borrowing limits are calculated when the underlying dollar changes. Those details were not part of the announcement.
