The U.S. Secret Service says it is investigating the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance Global and that its investigators helped freeze a significant portion of the stolen funds.
Who it affects
Binance users and anyone following the security incident that paused Binance withdrawals.
When
The Secret Service posted the statement at 18:11 UTC on Sunday 1 November 2026 (19:11 in Amsterdam). It says the freeze work began within minutes of the incident on Thursday afternoon, 29 October.

What the Secret Service said

The U.S. Secret Service has spoken publicly about the Binance theft. In a post on its official X account at 18:11 UTC on Sunday 1 November 2026, 19:11 in Amsterdam, the agency said it "continues to investigate the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance Global."

The same post says that "within minutes of the incident on Thursday afternoon, Secret Service investigators worked with industry partners to identify and freeze a significant portion" of the stolen funds. Thursday was 29 October 2026, the day the Binance security incident began.

The graphic attached to the post is headed "Binance Hack Investigation" and says the Secret Service is working on the case with federal partners.

What the post leaves out

The Secret Service did not give an amount for the frozen portion. It did not say which tokens or networks the frozen funds sit on, and it did not name the industry partners it worked with. It also did not say what happens next to the frozen funds.

In crypto, freezing usually means that a stablecoin issuer or a platform holding the stolen tokens blocks them so they can no longer be moved. That is a general explanation from Exchange.news; the post does not describe how this freeze was carried out.

Where Binance stands

Binance replenished the losses itself. As covered in our earlier stories, Binance said it replenished the stolen assets using part of SAFU, a portion of its Futures insurance fund and its corporate treasury, and that it will bear the financial impact of the stolen funds. On 1 November it said it had covered approximately 95% of the impacted amount.

Binance began reopening withdrawals in phases at 06:00 UTC on 1 November and reported $4.649 billion in withdrawals by 15:30 UTC that day. It said a full zero-knowledge Proof of Reserves report is expected on Monday 2 November.

Our advice: expect scam messages that offer to get stolen funds back or claim to act for investigators. Do not pay anyone or share account details in reply to such messages, and follow updates only on official accounts.
